The purpose of this research guide is not to cover the depth or the breadth of our resources on Alaskan history. There's an entire floor and a half of the library devoted to that. However, this guide is meant to assist scholars who are starting out in their Alaskan history research and aren't sure where to begin. If you need help, we hope you'll reach out to any librarian or staff person here at the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives, we're here to help.
Most of the resources listed here are available in print at the Elmer R Rasmuson Library from the Alaska and Polar Regions Collections & Archives (APRCA). However, when appropriate, outside collections are also linked.
The librarians, archivists, and curators at the APRCA have put together guides on various topics over the years. Along with those guides, there are various research guides which have been created by other organizations. If you're not sure where to start on your research, but you know the topic you're interested in, this is where you start.

The library has thousands of maps of Alaska. These date from the extremely inaccurate and very early to the much more detailed, some are hand-drawn in crayon and others are beautifully illustrated.
Reference works whether from dictionaries to encyclopedias are often helpful when searching out context. Here's a few important ones that you might want to know about when starting your Alaska history research work.
