The Alaska Natives on Film project was designed to:
During the course of the project VHS tape of the films and more than 1100 still-frame photographs captured from film were reviewed by Native elders in six Alaska locations. These locations were:
More than 500 relatives and friends were identified by Elders during the review process. These identifications generated 77 requests for print copies of the pictures, 3 requests for copies of the pictures on CD, and 64 requests for VHS tape copies of the film.
All identifications made during the project are included in summary descriptions of the individual film records in the library catalog.
VHS video copies of each film are available for checkout or interlibrary loan. Please contact your local library to make arrangements for this service.

Origin: The Oliver collection was donated to the University of Alaska during 1984.
The Oliver collection contains Eskimo (Inupiaq) footage taken while Ethel Oliver was teaching in the newly established village of Anaktuvuk Pass in the Brooks Range. AAF-001 [Grass gathering near Atka] b&w/silent 6 min. 1946
Summary: Grass gathering; residents cut long grass, dry it, and split it. Scenic boat ride by inlet or "Old Harbor" and rectangular holes are dug in the ground.
AAF-011 [Salmon industry — Bristol Bay] color/silent 12 min. 1944
Summary: Nushagak Bay, Ekuk village, activities include, float-plane landing, fish drying, children at play, tents and buildings, Bristol Bay sailing fleet at docks and fishing boats being towed away from harbor by small ship.

AAF-031 [Anaktuvuk Pass] color/silent 14 min. 1956
Summary: Activities at Anaktuvuk include: visitors arrive by airplane, children and adults look through books, carver works on wooden mask, people travel in motorboat and have a picnic, roofs and sod insulation are worked on, children play with paper airplanes and play other games, people travel across tundra in dog sleds, children and adults play string games, carvers use traditional bow drill and work on objects, visitors leave by float-plane.

The Forshaug collection contains Indian (Athapaskan) footage taken at Old Minto on the Tanana River while Forshaug was teaching school at the village

Summary: A variety of village activities are shown including: men voting, children in school and swimming, men digging a community well, unloading the Alice, a fishwheel, gardening, 4-H cooking demonstration, clearing land, Santa at the airfield, sealing beaver hides, riverboat Nenana, moose meat, dog races at the Minto Ice Carnival, children getting fruit at Easter, Post Office, hand-propping Cessna170, TB vaccinations, Tanana River break-up, Byers Air Service Flying Carpet, moving a church with a Caterpillar tractor during winter. The Snow collection contains Eskimo (Yupik) reindeer herding film taken by a Bureau of Indian Affairs agent in Southwest Alaska.

Summary: Images include reindeer herd and herders in Southwest Alaska, break-up on the Kuskokwim River, Eskimo women and children outside traditional dwellings alone and with sailors, boat "Ethel of Bethel", kayak with two Eskimo men, musher breaking up dog fight in team, and men butcher reindeer.

16mm color and b&w 6350ft raw footage 1928-1950
Origin: The UAF/Geist collection was filmed for the University of Alaska by Otto Geist and other university employees during the course of their work.
The Geist collection concentrates on Eskimo village (Yupik) and archaeological activity on St. Lawrence Island during the late 1920's. A small portion of the collection contains Alaska Territorial Guard activity at Nome during World War II and a small portion of Yukon River (Athabascan) activity.

The North Slope Borough School District Collection (NSBSD) consists entirely of film taken of Arctic Slope Eskimo (Inupiaq) villages. North Slope villages are featured with both production and raw footage. Additional information on finished elements in the collection was not located.
AAF-014 Hauling coal at Barrow color/silent 8 min. 1945-1955
Summary: Hauling coal from Atkasuk (Meade River) coal mine developed by Ed Burnell. Crane with 55-gallon drum used to fill freight car (similar to a railroad car but on a sled). Ruth and Ed Burnell in very windy surrounding, drifting snow, Caterpillar tows freight car which tips on side, it is shoveled out and pushed upright by Caterpillar. At Barrow women shovel out coal, sift, and place in bags.

Origin: The Peasgood/McRoberts collection was donated to the University of Alaska during 1997.
Ethel Peasgood taught school in Southwest Alaska during the 1940's and Ted McRoberts was a Deputy U.S. Marshall. Their combined collection contains images of Eskimo villages and people (Yupik) in Southwest Alaska. Many traditional activities are highlighted in the images. In addition the collection contains images of the day to day activities of residents of a Moravian Church orphanage on the Kuskokwim River and a finished film, Gospel of the Far North, about Moravian Missionary activity in the region. McRoberts also filmed briefly at the inland (Inupiaq) Eskimo community at Anaktuvuk

Collection origin: The Marston collection was donated to the University of Alaska during 1990.
At the onset of World War II an unknown Army Captain in Alaska conceived a unique and untried plan to defend America's far away northern Territory. Captain Marvin "Muktuk" Marston envisioned a "Tundra Army" composed of Eskimo, Aleut and Athabascan Alaska Natives.
Territorial Governor Ernest Gruening agreed with Marston and the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) became a reality. ATG members combined their centuries old survival skill and military training to be the eyes, ears and if necessary the lone defenders of Alaska.
Throughout the inception, induction, training and operation of the ATG Marston recorded the events in motion pictures. Recruiting, training and survival activities of the ATG were recorded in several villages. In addition numerous members are clearly identifiable. A fine record of this unique group during World War II exists.
Marston eventually wrote Men of the Tundra: Alaska Eskimos at War telling the story of the ATG, producing two films People of the Tundra and Eskimo Guardsmen about these unsung patriots. Along with the original raw footage this collection is the best surviving visual record of the Alaska Territorial Guard.

Summary: Silent film showing the establishment of the Alaska Territorial Guard during World War II and the eventual establishment of the Alaska National Guard in 1951. Some title frames are used in the film. Images include Colonel Marston and Governor Gruening swearing in soldiers at a number of remote locations. Eskimo Guardsmen drill with weapons, engage in a mock battle, unload supplies, load a barge with prefab building panels, and drill in uniform with World War I style helmets. Colonel Marston travels by dog team and with reindeer hooked to a sled while recruiting beluga whale and butcher a bowhead whale. Guardsmen and other Eskimo people divide whale meat, participate in a blanket toss and dance. Colonel John D. Alexander travels by Republic Sea Bee and meets with soldiers. Men fill survival containers and taste multi-purpose food. Colonel Lars L. Johnson takes command of the Guard during a ceremony.

Summary: Marvin "Muktuk" Marston, former commander of the Native Scouts utilized by the Alaska Territorial Guard during World War II gives his personal views of Native life. Marston shows scenes of Eskimo whaling and festivals, fishwheels and preserving fish in pits along the Yukon River, sternwheelers, dog playing with bear cubs. Diomede Island images include Eskimo men climbing cliffs and harvesting bird eggs, and hunter catching birds using decoys and a long pole with a small net. Origin: The Trodahl-Schwalbe collection was donated to the University of Alaska during 2000.
The Trodahl-Schwalbe collection was added to the project after being donated to the university. The collection was filmed in Southwest Alaska by Moravian missionaries and includes considerable footage of Yupik activities in the region. In addition a considerable amount of documentation accompanied the collection.
