About the Alaska Natives on Film Identification Finding Aid

Project Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities National Bank of Alaska

University of Alaska Fairbanks May 2003 Project Outline

The Alaska Natives on Film project was designed to:

  • Identify specific collections and film reels holding images of villages and Alaska Natives, incorporate elders in comprehensive identification of villages and people represented in each reel, and make VHS copies and still print copies available to family members identified during the project.
  • Create a database based on a preliminary review of each film reel to determine the region and native group represented in the images.
  • Catalog film images using MARC records in the University of Alaska Fairbanks library catalog.

During the course of the project VHS tape of the films and more than 1100 still-frame photographs captured from film were reviewed by Native elders in six Alaska locations. These locations were:

  • Fairbanks — Festival of Alaska Native Arts — March 2002
  • Anchorage — Alaska Federation of Natives Convention — October 2002
  • Bethel — Camai Festival — April 2003
  • Nome — Elders groups - April 2003
  • Barrow — Elders groups — April 2003
  • Kotzebue — Elders groups — May 2003

More than 500 relatives and friends were identified by Elders during the review process. These identifications generated 77 requests for print copies of the pictures, 3 requests for copies of the pictures on CD, and 64 requests for VHS tape copies of the film.

All identifications made during the project are included in summary descriptions of the individual film records in the library catalog.

Using this Finding Aid

  • Films are organized by collection and by film number within the collection. Collection information includes origin of the collection and general scope of the material in that collection.
  • Each individual film reel is identified by a letter-number combination beginning with AAF.
  • Each film reel includes a title, most often in brackets [ ] indicating the film consists of raw footage and is not a finished program. Finished film titles appear without brackets.
  • Titles are followed by information indicating if the film is color or black & white, if the film is sound or silent, film length, and time-frame that the material was filmed.
  • Following the collection and individual film information is a summary of the scenes in that film.
  • Captions for individual photographs identified during this project appear following the film summary. Each caption begins with the film reel number and individual frame number of the picture.
  • Eskimo names were used when available and appear in parentheses ( ) along with the English name when both are available.
  • Eskimo names in red were written using the Inupiaq Normal font.
  • Varied spellings for an individual name are separated by a slash /.
  • Names of individuals with conflicting identification are separated by a slash / and the last name is followed by a question mark in parentheses (?)
  • When the identification of an individual was only a strong possibility the name is followed by (?)
  • Possible spelling errors are followed by (sp)
  • Locations that were identified follow the names in the individual photograph.
  • Identified pictures DO NOT appear in this finding aid, only the captions are present. Plans are underway to make all identified pictures available in the near future.
  • Every attempt has been made to spell names correctly.

VHS video copies of each film are available for checkout or interlibrary loan. Please contact your local library to make arrangements for this service.

Collection origin: The Marston collection was donated to the University of Alaska during 1990.

At the onset of World War II an unknown Army Captain in Alaska conceived a unique and untried plan to defend America's far away northern Territory. Captain Marvin "Muktuk" Marston envisioned a "Tundra Army" composed of Eskimo, Aleut and Athabascan Alaska Natives.

Territorial Governor Ernest Gruening agreed with Marston and the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) became a reality. ATG members combined their centuries old survival skill and military training to be the eyes, ears and if necessary the lone defenders of Alaska.

Throughout the inception, induction, training and operation of the ATG Marston recorded the events in motion pictures. Recruiting, training and survival activities of the ATG were recorded in several villages. In addition numerous members are clearly identifiable. A fine record of this unique group during World War II exists.

Marston eventually wrote Men of the Tundra: Alaska Eskimos at War telling the story of the ATG, producing two films People of the Tundra and Eskimo Guardsmen about these unsung patriots. Along with the original raw footage this collection is the best surviving visual record of the Alaska Territorial Guard.
