The Catholic Church In Alaska

The Catholic Church had a limited presence in Alaska starting in the early 1840s-1860s. Though Missionaries came to Alaska starting in the 1860s, they had a limited organized presence in Fort Yukon, St. Michael and Nulato. Missions were established at Sitka, Wrangell and Nulato by the 1880s. In 1894, Alaska was separated from the Diocese of Vancouver Island and was under the jurisdiction of the Jesuits. In 1951, Alaska's first diocese, the Diocese of Juneau was founded. The Fairbanks diocese was founded in 1962 and the Anchorage diocese was founded in 1961. In general, Catholic Church records are held by the local diocese and inquiries should be sent to them.
