Study Carrel Use Rules

All carrel users must read and abide by the following carrel rules:

  • All regular library policies apply to the study carrels.
  • Only the individual assigned to the carrel is permitted to use the carrel.
  • Open flames and appliances that pose fire hazards (hot plates, coffee makers, etc.) are prohibited.
  • Most carrels are not completely enclosed and, therefore, are not secure. The library is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage to any materials left inside the study carrel.
  • Study carrels are not soundproof, though some may be sound-dampened. Please be considerate of other library users.
  • All study carrel occupants must leave the building before the library closes.
  • Patrons are responsible for keeping the carrel clean and free of odors. Please do not store food or drink in the carrel; janitorial staff do not enter the carrels.
  • For safety issues, please do not block study carrel windows.
  • All library materials used in the carrel must be checked out through the regular circulation procedure. Reference materials and materials not checked out will be removed and re-shelved.
  • Study carrels must be cleaned out by the user before the carrel’s due date. If the carrel is not emptied by its due date, it will be emptied by the library staff. All library books will be checked in and all personal items will be kept at the Circulation desk for one week, then turned over to Wood Center Lost and Found.
  • Keys may not be duplicated or loaned to other individuals. Keys must be returned to the circulation desk at the end of the loan period. Keys returned after the due date will be assessed late fees of $0.50 per hour, maxing out at the cost to rekey the lock.
  • Lost keys should be reported immediately to the Circulation desk. Replacement keys will be made available after payment of required fees. Keys not returned 3 weeks after the due date, or lost keys, will be charged a key replacement fee equal to the cost of rekeying the lock.

Carrels are monitored regularly by library staff, who may enter as necessary for safety and sanitation checks. Failure to abide by these policies will result in loss of your carrel privileges. The library reserves the right to reassign carrels or change locks.
