QuickSearch: Using QuickSearch

QuickSearch is a "discovery search" database you can use to search the Library Catalog and some UAF Library databases at the same time.

What is QuickSearch?

  • QuickSearch is a database you can use to search the Library Catalog and many Rasmuson Library databases at the same time. This means you can search for books, films, magazines, journals, and more, from one place.
  • QuickSearch searches approximately 95% of the Rasmuson Library databases.
  • Databases it doesn't search include the ProQuest databases & Westlaw.

Basic QuickSearch

  1. The fastest way to use QuickSearch is to type a keyword, title, or author into the search box and click Search.

  2. Use the filters to refine your results.
    For example, if you're just looking for journal articles click Academic Journals under Limit by Source Type.

Advanced QuickSearch

  1. Advanced searchers should click the Advanced Search link to access the Advanced Search screen.
  2. Once on the Advanced Search page, type your query and click Search.

    TipAdvanced Search allows you to search for multiple concepts on different field, and lets you use Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT); When searching for an exact phrase, put the phrase in "quotation marks"

  3. Use the filters to refine your results.

Refining Your Results

QuickSearch searches a variety of materials. Use filters to refine results.

Common filters are:

Limit To

  • Available in Library Collection
    Use this filter to retrieve items that Rasmuson Library has access to-- either in print or electronically.
  • Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals 
    Use this filter to retrieve journal articles that are scholarly/peer reviewed. 

Limit by Source Type

  • Academic Journals
    Use this filter to retrieve journal articles that are academic in nature.
  • Books
    Use this filter to retrieve books-- either in print or electronically.  

Understanding Your Results

Since QuickSearch searches the library catalog and many databases at the same time, your search results will differ in look and feel.

Common Search Results

Below are some common search results.


Item is available in online in full text

When an item is available online in full text you may see some of the icons or links as shown below.


PDF icon usually indicates the item is available in full text

The PDF icon indicates the item is available online in PDF format. Click the PDF icon to access the article in full text. 


Full text from an open access journal
The Open Access Available icon indicates the item is available online. Click the link to access the article in full text. 


Article is available from ScienceDirect

This article may be available from the database entitled ScienceDirect.  Click the link to access the article. 


EBook available from the database called Ebook Central

This is an eBook available online. Click the Subscription access for UAF faculty, students, and on-campus users link. Login to the database may be required. 


Item may, or may not be, available

The Find it! icon indicates Rasmuson Library may, or may not, have access to the item you need. Don't worry! If Rasmuson doesn't have it you can request it through InterLibrary Loan.
