Dental Hygiene/Dental Assisting Subject Guide

The Rasmuson and BioSciences Libraries provide resources in support of the Dental Hygienist and Dental Assisting programs. This guide is intended to help you identify and access those resources.

Articles

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition
This resource provides nearly 550 scholarly full text journals focusing on many medical disciplines. Coverage of nursing and allied health is particularly strong. In addition, this database includes the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide which covers 1,300 generic drug patient education sheets with more than 4,700 brand names.

Nursing and Allied Health Source
This resource provides journal articles, evidence based resources, and dissertations to support the study of the many aspects of nursing and the allied health professions, including physical therapy, radiography, dietetics, dental hygiene, and the clinical laboratory sciences.

Academic Search Premiere
Academic Search Premier contains full text for more than 4,600 journals, of which more than 3900 are peer reviewed. PDF backfiles to 1975 or further are available for well over one hundred journals, and searchable cited references are provided for more than 1,000 titles.

Consumer Health complete
Consumer Health Complete is designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. This full-text database covers all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicine, including topics such as aging, cancer, diabetes, drugs & alcohol, fitness, nutrition & dietetics, children's health, men & women's health, etc. Videos and reference sources are included.

Health source: Consumer Edition
Health Source: Consumer Edition is a collection of consumer health information covering topics such as cancer, diabetes, aging, fitness, nutrition, and general health issues. It provides access to nearly 80 full text consumer health magazines in addition to health related pamphlets, drug patient education sheets, and the Merrriam-Webster’s Medical Desk Dictionary.

MEDLINE
Indexes journal articles in clinical medicine, experimental medicine, dentistry, nursing, health services administration, and nutrition.

PubMed
PubMed is an index to journals in the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system and preclinical sciences. It also provides access to relevant web sites. PubMed is developed and maintained by the National Library of Medicine.

American Dental Assistants Association
The American Dental Assistants Association is the oldest, largest group representing professional dental assistants. Its members include clinical personnel, those working chair-side with the dentist, as well as those on the administrative side. Full text of The Dental Assistant, the official journal of the ADAA, is accessible in the Nursing and Allied Health Source database.

American Dental Hygienists Association
ADHA is the largest professional organization representing the interests of dental hygienists. Members enjoy professional support, educational programs, and numerous opportunities for participation in association decision-making. ADHA’s mission is to advance the art and science of dental hygiene, and to promote the highest standards of education and practice in the profession.

American Dental Association
The ADA is the professional association of dentists committed to the public's oral health, ethics, science and professional advancement, promoting initiatives in advocacy, education, research and the development of standards. The ADA web site provides information for dental professionals and the general public.

National Library of Medicine
The National Library of Medicine provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings)

MEDLINE plus: Drug Information
The National Library of Medicine sponsors this site featuring drug information provided by the United States Pharmacopoeia. A search for a medication, either generic or brand name, results in the uses, descriptions, precautions, and side effects of the drug. More than 9,000 medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, are covered in this database.

DHNet 


This is the web site of the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research. This comprehensive site offers much information on clinical dental hygiene, including case studies, smoking cessation, and periodontology. Links to other relevant databases, image databases, and Internet sites are also featured.

NIDCR National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIH)
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research is the federal government’s lead agency for scientific research on oral, dental and craniofacial health and disease. NIDCR shares research findings with the public, health care professionals, and policy makers. Institute staff also produce and distribute health education materials for consumers as well as dentists, physicians, and other health care providers.
