Gift Policy for General and BioSciences Library Collections

Gifts, whether of funds or materials, provide a valuable potential source for collection enhancement, and are welcomed. But since significant staff time and other library resources are involved in properly evaluating and processing material gifts, and since no library dealing with finite space limitations and following an orderly and rational collection development policy can absorb all materials which might possibly be donated, the following guidelines are established.

Collection Development

The Collection Development Officer oversees the evaluation, selection, and management of materials in the general collections at the Rasmuson Library, including books, periodicals, serials, videos, scores, recorded music, electronic resources, and many other materials.

The Collection Development Officer also coordinates the library liaison outreach efforts to all University of Alaska Fairbanks campus academic departments, in order to support the research and teaching needs of all UAF faculty and researchers. Library liaisons also select collection materials for graduate and undergraduate students, ensuring a wide breadth of information and a rich educational experience for all students at the UAF Libraries. Although we have liaisons to all departments, we do not necessarily have subject specialists for all disciplines, so faculty input is critical to the strength of our collections; please let us know if you have concerns or questions. We are also happy to make targeted presentations of our online databases and library catalog to your academic department or class. To arrange such a presentation, please call or email Diane Ruess at 474-6349, deruess@alaska.edu.

The Collection Development librarian establishes and maintains cooperative collection development agreements with other local, state, and regional libraries, which allow access for UAF library patrons to materials not owned by the UAF libraries.

Collection and gift policies are the responsibility of the Collection Development Officer, and questions about those policies may be directed to: karen.jensen@alaska.edu.

As a UAF student, faculty or staff member, your input on our collections is valuable. Suggestions for specific items or subject areas are greatly appreciated. If you'd like to make a suggestion, you may use our online forms (see below) or contact the Collection Development Officer, Karen Jensen, directly for an appointment, 474-6695, karen.jensen@alaska.edu.
