Digital Printing

We offer high resolution digital photographic prints up to 24" wide, by many feet long. We use Epson professional inkjet printers with K3 Ultrachrome inks, along with Epson Enhanced Matte  paper, to achieve prints with lightfastness ratings that exceed 80 years.

We also offer large-format poster printing. We have a 54" wide HP plotter printer that prints slightly lower resolution than the Epsons, but is much more cost-effective. This is an excellent solution for large displays and prints where archival-grade lightfastness is not a concern.

University Records for Researchers

The collection supports research into the history of the University, higher education, student life, territorial and state politics, Alaska's economic development, biography and genealogy, arctic sciences, agriculture, the Interior's cultural life, and much more.

Highlights of the University Archives include:

Rare Maps

The Rare Map Collection is especially strong in early maps of Alaska, from pre-discovery speculative cartography of the 16th century through the Gold Rush. Access is through Goldmine, our online catalog. Photographic copies may be ordered.

Rare Books

The Rare Book Collection contains approximately 6,000 volumes. Special strengths include early accounts and studies of the polar regions from the 15th to early 20th centuries. The Rare Books include one of the world's leading collections on Russian America. Most Rare Books are listed in Goldmine, the library's online catalog. Ninety percent of the collection has been copied on microfiche. To preserve the fragile originals, patrons should use the microfiche copies unless there is a special need to consult the originals.

Ordering & Using our Photographs & Archival Material

NOTE: This information only applies to photographs owned by the Archives at the University of Alaska Fairbanks [Alaska and Polar Regions Collections, Elmer E. Rasmuson Library].

In Alaska's Digital Archives, these materials are identified with the letters UAF on the identification line.

Alaska Newspapers

Rasmuson Library subscribes to 33 current newspapers from Alaska and northwestern Canada. We have over 5700 reels of Alaska newspaper microfilm, representing more than 500 different newspapers.

Manuscript Maps

The Manuscript Map Collection consists of maps, plats, and charts of Alaska. Its strength is 20th century Alaska development, with extensive holdings on mining claims, cannery sites, road development, and tourism. In-house indexes provide access through thematic description and geographic location. Photographic copies may be ordered.

Historical Photographs

Historical photographs include over 1,000,000 images dating from the 1870s to the present, documenting Alaska, the Yukon Territory, and Eastern Siberia. Of particular interest may be the Alaskan gold rushes (1880-1909), World War II in Alaska (1940-1945), the transition to statehood (1956-1967), and the Pipeline boom (1974 -1977).
