Rasmuson Library Code of Conduct

The Elmer E. Rasmuson Library is committed to providing all users, both UA-affiliated and public alike, an environment that is safe, well maintained, and conducive to research and study. We expect all users to respect the rights of others, the property of the Library and University, and the Library's scholarly mission. We also expect users to abide by any relevant local, state, or federal laws and these additional policies:

Library users must:

  1. Use computers and Internet resources within the guidelines presented in the Rasmuson Library Elmernet Computer Use Policies,UA Acceptable Use of Online Resources, and IT Policies & Computing Standards
  2. Cooperate with the requests of Library employees.
  3. Respond to emergency and security gate alarms and other situations as directed by Library employees.
  4. Leave the Library at closing time.
  5. Limit use to authorized areas of the Library.

Library users may not:

  1. Disrupt or harass other Library users:
    • Use cell phones noisily enough to disturb others.
    • Create disturbances with disruptive noise, e.g., loud talking, audible electronic devices, snoring.
    • Disturb others with strong odors, e.g., perfumes, tobacco, alcohol, unsanitary personal conditions, that trigger others' allergies or respiratory difficulties.
    • Vend, peddle, solicit, petition, or post handbills without permission of the Library Director.
    • Leave children under the age of 13 unattended (see UA Minors on Campus guidelines).
    • Bring animals, other than identified service animals, into the Library [UAF Policy 05.09.001].
    • Viewing sexually explicit material where others can see it is prohibited.
  2. Damage or deliberately misplace Library or University property:
    • Deface or damage materials, equipment, or furniture.
    • Remove furniture from the Library building.
    • Eat or use uncovered drink containers at computer stations.
  3. Make library resources unavailable to others:
    • Monopolize computers, space, or resources.
    • Remove furniture from the Library building.
    • Use public computers for recreational or other non-academic purposes when others are waiting to use them.
    • Use personal belongings to save a place at computer stations.
    • Sleep at computer stations.
    • Remove Library materials from the building without permission (checking out).
    • Deliberately misplace Library materials, as on the wrong shelf or in a study carrel.
  4. Engage in dangerous, threatening, or illegal behaviors:
    • Bring firearms, explosives, or concealed weapons into the Library [Board of Regents policy P02.09.020.]
    • Threaten or intimidate others, e.g., through abusive language, threats of violence, or harassment.
    • Engage in potentially unsafe or harmful behaviors, e.g., skateboarding, rollerblading, running, or throwing objects.
    • Engage in sexual activities, including indecent exposure.*
    • Be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or other intoxicants.* [UAF's Drug-free Schools and Communities Act amendments].
    • Use alcohol, illegal drugs, and/or other intoxicants while at the Library, outside the confines of permitted University events* [UAF Policy 05.12.001].
    • Leave personal belongings unattended.

Any Library user who violates or attempts to violate any any part of these rules (or who commits or attempts to commit any other behaviors illegal under the laws of Alaska or the federal government) is subject to sanctions, which may include:

  • Being asked to leave the library premises.
  • Being reported to the Dean of Students.
  • Having library privileges suspended or revoked.
  • Being banned from the UAF Libraries.
  • Being reported to the police.
  • Legal prosecution.
