The scholarly communication system, includes four main components, or steps:
- Peer Review, which is the review and evaluation of an author's work by his or her peers and which is standard procedure in the sciences,
- The work of editors on technical aspects of the writing,
- The work of publishers in printing books and articles and distributing them to buyers and subscribers, and
- Most importantly, the work of librarians in selecting books and periodicals for library users.
