Alaska Digital Library (formerly ListenAlaska)-- Downloading eBooks

This tutorial will walk you through downloading books from Alaska Digital Library (formerly ListenAlaska.). Note, you can not directly download Alaska Digital Library books to older Kindles, Kobos, Sony Readers and older Nooks; however you may be able to transfer files from your computer to your device.

  • About: Alaska Digital Library offers many mainstream fiction and non-fiction eBooks (as well as audio books).
    • Alaska Digital Library treats eBooks like paper books in a physical library:
      • If a book is checked out by another patron, you can place it on hold. Once on hold you'll receive an email notification when it becomes available.
      • If a book is available to borrow, you may download it to your device or read it in your browser for a limited number of days. 
  • Download Preparation:
    • Before you can download Alaska Digital Library eBooks to your mobile device or computer you'll need to have Adobe Digital Editions installed and have your Adobe ID available to use.
    • Have your UAF Polar Express card in hand, you'll need the number on the card.
    • If you're downloading to a Nook Color or an iPad you'll you'll need to have Overdrive Media Console installed on your device.

  • Downloading Books:
    1. When you find the book you'd like to borrow, click Borrow.
    2. Select University of Alaska Fairbanks - Elmer E. Rasmuson from the drop down menu.
      Select UAF from the list
    3. Type in your Card Number from your Polar Express ID and click Sign In.
    4. Select the number of days you'd like to borrow the book for. Choices are 7, 14, or 21 days; and click Borrow.
      Choose the number of days you'd like to keep the book checked out
    5. Select the format you wish to download (note, this isn't always an option) and click Confirm & Download.
      In this example we are downloading the EPUB format.
