How Do I ...? - Finding Things in the Library

Questions about where things are located in the library.

You're best bet is to speak with a reference librarian (see http://library.uaf.edu/reference). They can help you select a scholarly journal appropriate for your topic. Some databases that contain scholarly journals are JSTOR, Project Muse, Academic Search Premier (be sure to check the scholarly journal check box, otherwise you'll get non-scholarly items).

You can do a title search in Goldmine. Click "Goldmine" from the main page, and enter the title in the "title" search block. You may also see all the books we have on this author by doing an author search. If we don't have these books, maybe the Noel Wien Public Library does - you can check their catalog at http://library.fnsb.lib.ak.us/

We're not sure what you mean by the "registration desk." Do you mean the reference desk? If so, information about contacting the reference desk is at library.uaf.edu/reference.

These are on the 6th floor. You may see the maps of where things are in the library at http://library.uaf.edu/maps.

If you are a student, faculty, staff, or visiting scholar / guest, your Polar Express card is what you use to check out at Rasmuson Library. You can get a Polar Express Card at the Polar Express office, 116 Eielson Building.

The reserve desk is at the Circulation Desk on the fourth floor of the Rasmuson Library. This is where professors put books and articles on reserve for students to use. The usual period of time you may check out reserve items is 2 hours, and most items cannot be taken out of the library. The professor must arrange to put items on reserve with the Circulation Department. The library does not usually have the class's textbook unless the professor has arranged to put it on reserve ahead of time.

Well, almost every book in the library has a call number on it, on the spine, except for the bound periodicals, but I don't think that's what you're asking. Are you asking how to find a certain range of call numbers? The library of congress classification that the library uses can be seen at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/lcco/ and also on the end of shelves in the library, and at the Reference Desk on the fourth floor. If you need to know how LC call numbers work, check out these tutorials here and here.

On campus, you can go right to it from the library's home page, at http://library.uaf.edu; choose "find articles", then "by database vendor". You can choose a database that Ebsco hosts by name. If you don't know where to start, Academic Search Premier is one of the broader, more generalized databases for most disciplines.

Enter a word or phrase that describes what your topic is in the boxes at the top of the screen. You can put one word per box, or enclose two or three word phrases in quotes.

Example: "children AND alcoholism" (in separate boxes) will search for every article that has the word "children" AND the word "alcoholism" in it.

Example: “performance enhancing drugs” (in one box) will search for every article that has that exact phrase in that exact order.

Off campus, you will have to login using your UAF webmail login and password. (Usually "fsXXX [at] uaf [dot] edu" ).

You can also search more precisely by using one of the optional “select a field” dropdowns. Example: “children” in TI “Title” will search for all articles that have “children” in the title. Leaving the “select a field” box unselected will search all fields by default.

Checking the “Full Text” box will return only articles that have the entire article online for you to read, email to yourself, or print. Leaving this box unchecked means that you may get some results that Ebsco only has the abstract for. You will then have to request the full article via Interlibrary Loan.

Checking the “Scholarly (peer reviewed) Journals” box will return articles only from professional peer reviewed journals (i.e., no newspapers or popular magazines.)

You may also narrow your search by date using the “published date from” option on the right side of the screen.

Do you have more questions? Choose the online EbscoHost “Help” in the upper right hand of the screen to find out about more advanced searches, or ask for help from one of the reference librarians.
