How Do I ...? - Interlibrary Loan

Questions related to Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and ILLiad.

Please contact the ILL office. http://library.uaf.edu/ill

To use ILL, you must be a student, staff, faculty, distance student, or visiting scholar of UAF. You can register online for an ILLiad account at http://uaf.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/logon.html
ILL staff will verify your affiliation with the University, and approve your login and password. Thereafter, you will use your ILLiad account to request, track and renew your ILL items.

If you have ILL material that is overdue, a notice will be sent to you. If the item is not returned you will be blocked both from further ILL loan activity and general borrowing from the library.

If an item has not been returned 3 weeks after its due date, it will be invoiced (to you) for replacement fees. When an item has been invoiced, a block is placed on your patron ID. This block suspends all library privileges. When the item is returned or paid for, basic library privileges are reinstated. However, ILL privileges are still suspended for 60 days.

Interlibrary Loan works because libraries honor each other's policies and due dates. Timely return of ILL materials assures that we will continue to be able to borrow from other libraries. Keeping an ILL book beyond the due date jeopardizes our ability to borrow from that lender in the future, and may make important research materials unavailable to other UAF researchers.

Materials MUST BE RENEWED during the appropriate time frame. Renewals can only be submitted 2 days prior to their due date up through the date they are due. Items ARE NOT eligible for renewal past their due date.

Make sure you check your email for automatic system generated notifications regarding your pending due dates.

Renewals must be approved by the library that sent the item. Please check your item first to make sure that "No renewals" is NOT printed or stamped on the label affixed to the cover of your item.

To request a renewal:

  1. Log on to ILLiad
  2. Select  Checked Out Items / Renew Requests (on the left side under View)
  3. Locate the item you wish to renew and click its Transaction Number.
  4. Once the detailed description page loads you will be able to request your renewal via the option in the upper right corner.

Please request renewals after receiving your "overdue soon" email notification or within a four days of the due date listed on the label affixed to the front of your item. Many libraries will refuse to renew items which are already overdue, so please don't delay if you think you need the item longer than allowed. Once you have requested your renewal you will immediately receive a temporary due date. This is only a temporary due date. You will be notified by email if your renewal has been granted or denied.

  • Photocopy requests may take from 2 days to 2 weeks to arrive depending upon which library or document delivery service can supply the item and how it will be delivered (electronically or physically).
  • Book requests average between 1 to 3 weeks to arrive, depending on the source of the material.
  • Audio/Visual (A/V) materials usually take longer to obtain. Many libraries will not lend their A/V materials through the ILL system, so finding a source usually takes a little longer than for book requests. If you need A/V material rushed, you may want to consider finding another source other than ILL for your material, such as purchasing the item yourself or renting from a local video store.

Use our Online Request System called ILLiad to submit your request online.
If you require assistance with using our online request system, please contact us and we will be happy to walk you through the process.

Rasmuson Library ILL attempts to borrow materials as economically as possible. Whenever possible we provide ILL service without a charge to the patron. We will cover the cost of any loan or copy fees. We will not, however, cover the costs for purchases of entire items, lost or damaged materials, rush fees, special service fees, or repair/replacement costs.

The following materials can be obtained by UAF Interlibrary Loan:

  • photocopies of articles and book chapters
  • books
  • dissertations and theses
  • videos (VHS and DVD) and films
  • sound recordings (all formats)
  • microforms and microfiche

If we own an item regardless of format at either the Rasmuson or BioSciences Library, the item can not be ordered via Interlibrary Loan.

All current UAF faculty, staff, and students are eligible to receive UAF Interlibrary Loan services.

To be eligible for submitting a request, you must first be registered with the Rasmuson Library or BioSciences Library circulation system. You must have a current library or Polar Express card and have no overdue materials or fines.

In addition, we support researchers affiliated with governmental agencies that need ILL service for job-related research. Current UAF Alumni Association members are also eligible. All others needing ILL service are encouraged to contact the Fairbanks North Star Borough Public Library.
