New Online: Doris Stephan Photograph Collection

The Stephan collection consists of 105 photographs of street scenes, buildings, dog teams, bridges, animals, landscapes, aircraft, people, and aerial views. Views include construction, the sternwheeler “Aksala”, Camp Aehnder, and quonset huts.

Howard T. Ryan, collector of Doris Stephan Photograph Collection, was born in the Bronx, New York, on April 25, 1906 and died in Florida on February 24, 1962. He worked in Alaska on construction projects from 1943 through 1944.

New Online: Candace Waugaman Collection, Fairbanks Area Bars, 1959

Fairbanks area bars photographs include 9 color prints (taken from slides) with images of Fairbanks area bars, the Golden Days parade, the Fairbanks airport, and Santa Claus House.

The Candace Waugaman Collection consists of historical manuscripts, memorabilia, ephemera, and photographs. The bulk of the materials relate to the history of the Fairbanks region; however, parts of the collection relate to events around Alaska as a whole and to the history of the Yukon Territory.

Candace Waugaman has been a resident of Alaska since the late 1960s. She has collected Alaskan and Yukon memorabilia for many years.  Waugaman is a real estate broker, serves as a volunteer and board member for several Fairbanks non-profit agencies, has been the secretary for the Tanana-Yukon Historical Society, served as President of the Alaska Historical Society, and has helped organize the International Symposium on Mining.

New Online: Gladys Rafter Photograph Collection

The Rafter collection consists of 1 album of 19 photographs, primarily of Anchorage scenes. There are also a few images from elsewhere in Alaska, including a photograph taken on the set of the film “The Cheechakos.”

This collection has been de-accessioned from the Alaska & Polar Regions Collections.
Regretfully, we had to remove it from Alaska’s Digital Archives.

New Online: Clarence L. Andrews Papers, 1890-1949, Scrapbook of miscellaneous memorabilia

The Clarence L. Andrews Papers consist of diaries, notebooks, a scrapbook, photographs, publications and manuscripts. They document Andrew’s library research as well as his observations of Eskimo lifestyle, reindeer herding, arctic flora and fauna, and life in Sitka, Skagway, Eagle, Deering, Kivalina, Nome and Barrow, Alaska.

Clarence Leroy Andrews (1862-1948), a writer, photographer, U.S. Customs officer, Eskimo-rights advocate and teacher, spent many years traveling in, photographing, and writing about Alaska.

New Online: George A. Llano Collection, circa 1948

The George A. Llano Collection consists of 111 photographs relating to Llano’s lichen research and the Anaktuvuk Pass and Wainwright areas, circa 1948.  Subjects include plant collecting and identification, people and village activities in Anaktuvuk Pass, airplane flights, scenes from Wainwright, and Llano’s research associates including Robert Rausch, Lloyd Spetzman, Simon Paneak and others.

New Online: Ransom T. (Tony) Schultz collection, 1960-1990

Ransom Tony Schultz (Tony) came to Alaska in 1938. That same year he bought his first plane and obtained his pilot’s license. He began flying for Star Airlines (later Alaska Airlines) in 1940, and in 1950, was chosen as their first chief bush pilot. He also flew in Alaska for Northern Consolidated Airlines, Wien Airlines, Interior Airlines, and as a bush pilot for the Bureau of Land Management. Tony also worked with Hawkins & Powers, who were in the forest firefighting business in connection with the United States Department of the Interior, BLM. Hawkins & Powers were pioneers in developing airplanes from surplus World War II airplanes, making them droppers for Borate to put out the fires. He died in 1993.
